about the artist
Haley Davis is a theatre artist, educator, studio, and digital artist.
Haley studied early modern theatre and Shakespeare, earning her Master of Letters and Master of Fine Arts at Mary Baldwin University. Haley’s research centers on women and gender in classical text and performance, her scholarship and artistic work investigating the performance of women in Shakespeare’s male roles: what do power, presence, and influence look like independent from traditional understandings of masculinity?
Haley’s illustrations are an extension of this question. Her 2022 series, Women in Shakespeare, seeks to examine the relationship between Shakespeare’s female characters and the objects that define their character and often mark their downfall. Her 2025 work reimagines the Women in Shakespeare series, adding new pieces that capture some of Shakespeare’s most evocative text.
O, full of scorpions is my mind, dear wife.
Macbeth | Act 3, scene 2
There may be in the cup
A spider steeped, and one may drink, depart,
And yet partake no venom, for his knowledge
Is not infected; but if one present
Th’ abhorred ingredient to his eye, make known
How he hath drunk, he cracks his gorge, his sides,
With violent hefts. I have drunk, and seen the spider.
The Winter’s Tale | Act 2, scene 1
